If you've followed us on social media, you know that a few weeks back I started a series called "what's that" where I explain phenomenon seen and terms heard in the crystal industry that aren't necessarily explained. I will be adding the notes from those videos here, in case anyone would like to read them and review the sources for themselves.
In episode 1, we explore a term that we've all heard but no one really takes the time to explain - Druzy.
Coming from the German word “druse,” which refers to a collection of tiny crystals on a host crystal surface.
It forms when mineral rich water gets into a host mineral’s cavities, called vugs, which are formed due to gas bubbles, erosion or mineral dissolution and tectonic activity. When the water evaporates, the minerals left behind deposit in the cavity and begin to crystalize in the space, leaving tiny crystals all over the cavity surface. Most of the druzy formed is silica based, which becomes quartz, chalcedony, or agate, but other minerals that can produce druzy are calcite, malachite, azurite, chyrsocolla, pyrite, hematite and garnet.
